No Optimism Today... Please

Well after all that wishful thinking on the part of conservative pundits and bloggers, the truth arrived in an embarrassing thumping. As it turns out, the United States citizenry resembles Nancy Pelosi more than it resembles Rick Santorum. Conservatives are much more in the minority than we thought, and the Party we looked to... to bravely carry our message forth... turned out to be top-heavy with feckless, self-serving politicians.

Yesterday the spirit of Neville Chamberlain moved across the face of the deep as Americans chose peace rather than war... a truly odd choice in a world where peace is not an option... But choose they did.

In a couple days I will be ready to look ahead, to listen to our Hugh Hewitts and Michelle Malkins tell us how this is really going to turn out to be a blessing! But not today. Today I think it is important to be realistic and embrace this terrible fall - this defeat - this tragedy - for what it is. America took a step parallel to its emerging nature yesterday... A very dangerous step in the wrong direction.

In a couple days I will start considering what all this means for Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, and Newt Gingrich.

But not today.

Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pens
and no cattle in the stalls,

yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.

Dear dismayed conservatives:

I hereby make these promises to you.

We will protect your lives and livelihoods.

We will listen to and respect that you are entitled to your beliefs.

We will never try to force you to change your religion, sexual orientation, or first language.

We will do our best to reduce the number of abortions in our country.

We will have no tolerance for corruption and cronyism, even in our own party.

ESPECIALLY in our own party.

We will never tell you that your opinion doesn't count.

We will never waste your lives for power.

We will hold our leaders to a high ethical standard and when they succumb to lust for power, WE WILL HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.

If we forget this, please remind us.

We need you to do this. You are America as much as we are.

Time to get to work.

Anonymous,

I'll believe your promises when you hold Congressman William Jefferson (with the $90K in his freezer) accountable for his bribe-taking. Until then, talk is cheap.

Thanks for the sentiment, though.

"Jun 15, 2006 (AP)— House Democrats, determined to make an election-year point about ethics, voted 99-58 Thursday night to strip Rep. William Jefferson of his committee assignment while a federal bribery investigation runs its course."

Jefferson had offered to step aside temporarily if the Democratic caucus established a rule concerning cases like his and if his seat went to Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-LA). This offer was rejected by House Democratic leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi because she was of the opinion that Jefferson had no right to make any demands.

Much like your side really has no right to make any such demands about accountability given the pitiful record Republicans have on such things. But no matter. We're already on it because it's the right thing to do.
