The Man that Democrats Won't Vote For

The U.S. Ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, launched a scathing attack on the United Nations Friday.
Bolton was furious over the adoption by the General Assembly of a resolution which said the assembly regretted the deaths of 19 civilians in an attack by the Israeli military in the town of Beit Hanoun last week.
"Many of the sponsors of that resolution are notorious abusers of human rights themselves, and were seeking to deflect criticism of their own policies," he said. "This type of resolution serves only to exacerbate tensions by serving the interests of elements hostile to Israel's inalienable and recognized right to exist."
"This deepens suspicions about the United Nations that will lead many to conclude that the organization is incapable of playing a helpful role in the region,"
Bolton continued. "In a larger sense, the United Nations must confront a more significant question, that of its relevance and utility in confronting the challenges of the 21st century. We believe that the United Nations is ill served when its members seek to transform the organization into a forum that is a little more than a self-serving and a polemical attack against Israel or the United States," he said. "Meanwhile, it has failed to address real human rights abuses in Burma, Darfur, the DPRK, and other countries," Bolton charged.
The United States, and Australia joined Israel in voting against the motion, together with four small Pacific island nations. All countries in Europe, including Britain, voted to support the resolution.

Bolton gets it. Bolton calls a spade a spade. Bolton supports Israel. Democrats won't support Bolton. American Jews vote for Democrats.

I don't get that.

Dennis Prager has talked about this a lot. When you're attacked for your faith (the Nazis and now the jihadists), then abandoning the faith feels safer.

And, like a battered wife, if someone else is provoking your abuser, you want to make that person stop. The US is seen as provoking the Muslim world against us, and the hope is that if we stop doing that, the jihadists will leave us all alone and we'll be safer.

It's a vain hope, of course, but many battered wives never learn to fight back. Some even get angry at the cops who show up to stop the abuse.

Great post Chris, I don't get it either. I'm the child of a Jewish mother and Catholic father, both democrats. They believe me and my brother were switched at birth because we're republicans.

What Dennis and Skye say make so much sense I guess they can't see the forest for the trees. Time and again (this Thanksgiving) we'll try to point out the values we were taught are, in fact, those of the GOP. The values they both hold are republican values.

At the conclusion of our meal, we'll pack up our families and head to our respective homes, in defeat. They won't change. So we live to fight another Holiday, and lose again. You can't raise your parents!

Skyepuppy,

Intersting analysis. I always just figured that the "liberal politics" of the Dems outweighed their loyalty to Israel.

JT,

Do your parents at least admit that the Dem "Leadership" doesn't reflect their values?

Sometimes I think in politics some people develop a kind of "team loyalty" that transcends values and political beliefs - to the point that it all becomes very irrational.

I have known very conservative Christians in my church who vote for Democrats.

Hang on... I thought that you guys hated John Bolton.

Matter of fact, I also thought you guys were pretty anti-Jewish yourselves.

What gives?

Jacob,

I don't know how you got that idea. I have always been a supporter of Israel... And John Bolton.

I don't particularly like Michael Bolton.

I've always supported Israel and John Bolton. I don't think I've ever intimated otherwise.

My folks are 78 and 80, and I think they're still voting for FDR and John Kennedy. There is a team loyalty that can't be broken. My mother can't stand "San Fran Nan" and My father, an USAF veteran, won't vote for Murtha. But they vote "all the D's" on the ballot.

They both make my head hurt. And I can go through it all over again Thursday.

Jacob,

Israel's strongest supporters in the world are America's Evangelical Christians. We may be Israel's only supporters.

In the Old Testament, God promised blessings on the nations that supported Israel and curses on those that cursed Israel.

In America, it's the Democrats who oppose Israel and who believe the UN is a viable institution as it is now. Republicans (and particularly Evangelicals) want to see major reforms in the UN, and Bolton is the only one standing up to the status quo there, so he's our man.

You're usually better informed about things than this.

JT,

Your comment reminds me of "Little Big Man" when Dustin Hoffman is getting on the nerves of a fellow Brave, and the Brave says that he is getting a"pain between his ears."

Good luck on Thursday... Have you tried Xanax or Valium?

Call me ignorant on the John Bolton thing. I had always just assumed that his inability to exert more pressure on the UN was somewhat of a hindrance to the American government.

As for evangelicals being for the creation of a Jewish state: don't Christians believe that Jews will go to hell?

SkyePuppy said...

Jacob,

Christians believe that anyone who hasn't accepted Jesus as their Savior by the time they die will go to hell. There are open questions on this, like: What about the people who have never heard about Jesus? The usual answer (for me, anyway--some people are pretty harsh) is that God is good and just and merciful, and He will do what's right, whatever that is. That question is not mine to answer.

At the same time, God chose the Jews as His special people and promised to bless the world through them. The Apostle Paul always preached to the Jews first and then the Gentiles. Who are we, as modern Evangelicals, to love them less than Paul did?

Even beyond the religious question about supporting Israel (which I mentioned in my previous comment), we support Israel because she is an oasis of liberty and prosperity in the midst of tyranny and oppression--nations bent on her destruction. On that basis alone, Israel deserves our support.

Can't.... resist.... temptation...

Oh, what the heck:

John 3:18
Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already.

God sends his 'chosen people,' the Israelites, to hell. Sorry, but that's the unbending, unquestionable and inerrant Word of God. Supposedly.

You know, I think I've written about this already

Chris, I just got my yearly refill of "Holiday" valium, to which I will give half to my brother. The 60 pills should hold us through until New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve is an easy one. They go to bed after my dad has sausage, sauerkraut & potato dumplings. My mother, who's a Messianic Jew, will have kugel. (She has accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior but she won't eat pork).

My brother and I will tuck them into bed around 8pm and head off to un-twist our brains from the Holiday insanity with a good bottle of wine.

Now that sounds like a plan, followed by a party.

Enjoy!

Jacob,

If you're itching for a fight, I don't want to play. You asked, I answered.

I support Israel for religious and political reasons. God loves the Jews and so do I, and I want them to avoid hell by accepting Jesus as their Messiah. I've finished now.

I'm sorry Skye, and I don't really want another acrimonious fight over the internet about religion. It doesn't work, and I've learned that lesson several times over.

But it just really gets to me the way so many Christians - hypocritically, I'm my view - try to defend Jewish people when your religion says something completely different.

I really, honestly don't want to offend. Except maybe Jihadi Tracker, but only cause he's funny to argue with.

To know why jews align with democrats, you may have to go down the lane of history. Remember the era of red scare when being conservative ment support for eugenics. Racial quota's were put to supress jewish and italian immigration.
Then was the McCarthy's era when a jewish person easily made it to Red List. Nixon even though had Henry Kissienger was inherently anti-semite. Generations which saw all these cannot easily adopt that party.
Think twice before indulging in hispanic bashing.

Malott said...

Anonymous,

Is closing the southern border to illegal immigration Hispanic bashing?

Closing the border is what everyone agrees. It is not difficult with the kind of technology that we have today.
But there should be some way of legalizing those who work here and have families. That is where the whole difference is.
I remember once there was a talk here about ethnic profiling to capture illegals. That is just one of many thoughts of conservatives which keep certain sections from embracing it.
Altering the idealogy in future to make way for that section would look fake.
