Quoth the President,
"My Friend Johnny Sutton"
So there you go.
This afternoon I was reading Skyepuppy's post about the two Border Patrol Agents who shot the drug runner in the butt... The one who pointed a gun at them... And how these agents were convicted to 11 and twelve years while the drug runner received immunity... And how the jury was not allowed to hear that the drug runner had broken his deal with the government by running more drugs, or that his mother said he always carried a gun... Facts that were made "classified" by Homeland Security.
Then on the way home I heard an audio clip on the radio of Bush addressing the situation by saying that the "prosecutor Johnny Sutton was from Texas and a good friend..." Appointed by Bush.
The judge was appointed to the bench by Bush, by the way.
So, we have Bush kissing Mexican gluteos... beso butt... George once again showing he cares more about what the Mexican Government thinks than the American people.
Thanks George.
We can only hope that when someone in the crowd points a gun at President Bush... The Secret Service will show more restraint than did the Border Patrol Agents.

Uh, Malott? I hope no one points a gun at anyone, let alone a president (sitting or otherwise).
This story IS distressing, I agree. Just think, in just over a year, we could have worse! (Where IS Fred?) smile???
Delta...
I don't want any guns pointed, either.
But I fear the two Border Patrol Agents are in prison because of Bush's loyalty to his friend, the prosecutor, and the Mexican Government.
You can bet if someone pointed a gun at the President, the secret service would take them out... And the agents wouldn't end up in prison.
We were having trouble with the TV remote yesterday (first time we've turned on the TV since we got back to California). The TV was stuck on C-SPAN, which was showing the Senate hearing where Sutton was being questioned, so I left it tuned there.
Interesting. Sutton kept emphasizing several things.
1. He, himself, did not make the decisions about what statute to try the agents under or what type of immunity and visa to give the smuggler. But those decisions were review by higher-ups (just not by him). And he stands by his people.
2. All the facts were presented during a jury trial, and the jury found them guilty (and he seemed to imply that because the jury believed one side over the other when testimony conflicted, that made what they believed the true stuff--I'm not sure I understood him right). And because the jury found them guilty, they're bad agents.
3. The crime the agents committed, which allowed them to be tried under the statute that comes with a mandatory 10-year additional sentence, was to cover up the shooting.
4. This trial was in El Paso, where juries give Border Patrol agents all the benefit of the doubt, so the fact that they were found guilty says really bad things about them and what they did.
5. Sometimes a strong message needs to be sent so other agents aren't tempted to cover things up.
Sutton sounded like a nice enough man defending his subordinates. But while I was watching, I didn't hear anything about failure to report a shooting being an administrative infraction punishable by a three-day suspension, nor any discussion about why this event's not being reported doesn't qualify as that infraction.
I also didn't hear anything about the Mexican Consulate getting involved by requesting prosecution of Ramos and Compean, or how closely the timing of their request coincided with the US Attorney's decision to throw the book at the agents.
The whole thing stinks. Our President prefers being friends with Mexico over being friends with Americans. At least that's the way it looks.
Now, I haven't been following this story closely at all, so I don't really know what I'm talking about. But I'm curious why you guys think that Bush would be kissing up to Mexico. He's never cared about other countries in any other context. So why now?
Malott...
I know you don't want any guns pointed at anyone...just thought I'd quickly interject before the FBI, CIA, Interpol, and Homeland Security broke down your door and haul you off to some hidden prison where we would never find you again! (I likes ya, bud!)
Mojo:
The possibility of Mexican oil??? I dunno!
Delta,
Mexican oil? Since I hadn't heard they were anything of a major player in oil, I checked it out. According to the Department of Energy (http://www.eia.doe.gov/cabs/opecnon.html), "oil export revenues make up less than a tenth of Mexico's total exports, down from more than 70% two decades ago." So that doesn't sound like a likely reason to me.
And also, if that were the case, why doesn't he try to get better relations with Venezuela, where there's a hell of a lot more oil?
I'm not saying Bush isn't sycophanting the hell outta Mexico, but that oil doesn't seem the reason.
Mojo,
I could be wrong, but since one of the left's favorite lines is that Bush went into Iraq for oil, I think Delta was making a joke.
observer...
Good point. I duck my head in shame at my own stupidity...
