Leaving Iraq

Even as our troops make serious progress against al-Qaeda-in-Iraq and other extremists, Congress - including Republican members - is sending the terrorists a message: "Don't lose heart, we'll save you!"

Al-Qaeda-in-Iraq is suffering a humiliating defeat, as fellow Sunni Muslims turn against the fanatics and help them find the martyrdom they advertise.

Yet for purely political reasons - next year's elections - cowards on Capitol Hill are spurning the courage of our troops on the ground.

But if Republicans are rushing to desert our troops and spit on the graves of heroes, the Democratic Party at least has been consistent - they've supported our enemies from the start, undercutting our troops and refusing to explain in detail what happens if we flee Iraq.

So I'll tell you what happens: massacres. And while I have nothing against Shia militiamen and Sunni insurgents killing each other 24/7, the overwhelming number of victims will be innocent women, children and the elderly.

* After suffering a strategic defeat, al-Qaeda-in-Iraq comes back from the dead and gets to declare a strategic victory over the Great Satan.
* Iran establishes hegemony over Iraq's southern oil fields and menaces the other Persian Gulf producers.
* Our troops will have died in vain. Of course, that doesn't really matter to much of anyone in Washington, Democrat or Republican. So we'll just write off those young Americans stupid enough to join the military when they could've ducked out the way most members of Congress did.
* A slaughter of the innocents - so many dead, the bodies will never be counted.

I hate the long-mismanaged mess in Iraq. I wish there were a sensible, decent way to get out that wouldn't undercut our security and produce massive innocent casualties. But there isn't. Not now. And, like it or not, we have a moral responsibility as well as practical interests in refusing to surrender to the butchers in Iraq.

This has been the Bush-Cheney War. But it will only be fair to call the carnage after we run away the "Reid-Pelosi Massacres."

Our leaders in Washington are full of noble words and we elect them to keep us safe and govern in a way that preserves our freedoms. But is there a leader in Washington whose first consideration isn't politics? Or are they so jaded... So insulated... So safe... So protected by the propaganda machine that they can play us - and our men in uniform - in any way that furthers their power and careers?

And to the Republic for which it stands? When our leaders speak treason and undercut our troops - they've lost my allegiance.

I heard Dennis Prager's show this morning, and his guest was Fouad Ajami, a Middle East expert and professor (not a terror apologist). Ajami said he's been to Iraq at least 6 times, and when he goes he never stays in "The Bubble" (the Green Zone).

It's a good term, and the Beltway is America's Big Bubble. What's real, what's normal, never penetrates inside. The people there think the things they do have no consequences, especially not the unintended ones, and their continual call for bringing the troops home is looking more and more like willful ignorance.

They remind me of the senators, during the run-up to the Iraq War, who avoided the intelligence briefings, so they could claim they had no knowledge of the situation and could continue to oppose Bush.

Of course, if we were to pull out the troops the way they want us to, when the massacres came (which of course they would), the Dems would blame Bush for having messed up "their" peace.

I've never understood why they stopped the air to ground missiles. I think this is more about the "pre-election war" in the U.S. than about the troops in Iraq. THAT ticks me off a bit.

Since the head honchos are sure that Al-Quida is in the upper mountain range in the Pakistan-Afgahnistan border (which I've been saying for years, btw) - then why doesn't our military just bomb the crap out of it?

It's about time we fought a war. Our troops jobs aren't to do the job of the U.N. or other agencies while putting their lives on the line.

Whew! I feel better now that I have that off my chest!

If the pot bangers in the house and senate REALLY want to end this war, STOP the funding. But they won't be cause they just like making noise and making this adminitration miserable.

And while I'm at it, how're they doing on meeting their "benchmarks" and the goals for their first 100 days?

NOT SO MUCH!

Janice,

These items were taken care of pretty quick - it would have been easy to miss them if you were tuned out that week for some reason. Me, I was on vacation for much of January (turned 40 in Maui!), and the liberal media didn't really trumpet this accomplishment.

Here's an update for you on the house's actions last January. I think you'll agree it's true that the house met it's "benchmarks" quite well.
