The Trainwreck

In the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination, it’s John McCain at 33%, Mitt Romney at 29%, and Mike Huckabee at 21%. Ron Paul is supported by 6% of Likely Republican Primary Voters (see recent daily numbers). Romney leads by sixteen percentage points among conservatives while McCain has a two-to-one advantage among moderate Primary Voters.

That's McCain 33% and Conservatives 50%.

You're assuming a great deal if you think that when McCain gets the nomination... The Huckabee and Romney supporters will line up like loyal lads and automatically jump on John's bandwagon. After the antics he's pulled over the past 8 years... Don't wager your farm.

What we should be discussing is the fact that neither McCain nor Huckabee can put together a coalition of voters that has a chance to beat Clinton or Obama.

Huckabee would bring out most conservatives but would fail miserably with moderates and independents. Oddly, most Americans' "dream president" is not a wise-cracking former Baptist preacher from Arkansas with all the sophistication and personal gravitas of Jethro Bodine.

McCain can't win without an enthusiastic conservative base... Which will not materialize because conservatives despise McCain. They dislike liberal Democrats... But they despise McCain - and it's totally personal. He is the traitor in their midst.

Romney is the only one that could unite the Party... But with the moderates and independents going for McCain... and the anti-Mormon bigots mesmerized by Huckabee - That's not going to happen.

I think it's pretty much over. Maybe the smart thing for Republicans to do would be to pick the least offensive Democrat... And send her money.

Odd as it is, I find myself in agreement with most of this blog post. Obviously for Democrats - and liberal-leaning observers outside the US like me - a John McCain ticket would spell death for the Republicans' chances against Clinton or Obama. I personally believe that Romney would also be a losing ticket, but marginally less so than McCain.

Meanwhile, I'm bathing in schadenfreudelicious glee over the progress of the primaries so far.

Huckabee would only bring out the moral conservatives. He'd chase away the fiscal conservatives faster than the cross chases away a vampire.
