Meanwhile in Washington...

The gray van slowly makes its way down Pennsylvania Avenue on a cool afternoon in the nation's capitol. Beads of sweat form on the young Saudi's head as be glances at the small nuclear device behind him. With a shout of "Allah Akbar!" he detonates the device.

In less than a second the President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, and most of Congress die in a fiery explosion.

Who will lead our country back from the brink? Who will step in and thwart the evil that threatens us?

Well... Back in Wheeling, West Virgina Senator Robert C. Byrd has just cut the ribbon, opening the recently built - at taxpayer expense - "Robert C. Byrd Aerobic Gym and Tanning Center."

As President Pro Tempore of the Senate the 89-year-old former Klansman is third in the line of presidential succession.

Upon hearing the news of the attack and his sudden rise to power, Byrd exclaims "I have a little dog, a Maltese dog, Billy Byrd."

Man, sometimes I don't know where to start.

What kind of explosive is going to wipe out the congress, the president and veep -- short of a nuclear bomb?

I agree, Byrd is a tool. But I don't understand what you were getting at the line about the dog. 'splain to a dumb Hoosier.

CMac,

In my post I said "small nuclear device" - which could take out the president, VP, and Congress.

And Byrd is known for his endless ramblings on the Senate floor - and the line about the dog is a quote from one of his more famous sessions.

Good to see you back - you do stir the pot.

What if he only gets the President and the VP?

Who would be worse? President Byrd, or President Pelosi? I can't decide.

Byrd: I agree.

Pelosi: It would be fun to watch the righties squirm.

President Byrd...that's a scary thought and sobering as well. Sobering because I know that it really wouldn't be as hard as it sounds for that happen. All it would take was one or two determined "jihadists" and America wouldn't know what hit it.

It reminds me of the Tom Clancy books "Debt of Honor" and "Executive Orders" (I think). It's spooky to read how very similar his fictional plots were to what actually happened on Sept. 11th...and if jihadists can do what once seemed impossibly fictional...they can accomplish this too.

A sobering thought indeed.

Maybe it will be Congressman Ellison driving the van.

Hypothetically even if Sen. Byrd becomes President, he'll be only incharge till the elections are held. He's got great respect for the constitution and democracy.

A news article in a local Indian paper. US media did not cover this and probably this article may be suspect(http://deccan.com/nation/Nationalnews.asp).

’93 blasts suspect traced to America

New Delhi, Jan. 5: The United States has informed India that it has traced Feroz Abdul Rashid Khan, wanted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai, and has sought further evidence from New Delhi to decide whether he should be detained. “The CBI has approached the US authorities for deporting or extraditing Khan, against whom an Interpol red corner notice is pending from 1994 onwards,” a CBI spokesperson said here on Friday.

The CBI has received a communiqué from Interpol in Washington about Khan’s presence in the US. The 1959-born fugitive has reportedly acquired US citizenship. After learning about Khan’s presence in the US, the CBI asked Interpol, Washington, to confirm his identity. The CBI has sent photographs and a dossier on Khan to the authorities in the US for identi fication purposes.

A decision on whether Khan should be detained and sent back to India will be taken on the basis of evidence provided by New Delhi, the spokesperson said. Khan is accused of being one of the key conspirators in the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai that killed 257 people and injured 713, besides damaging property worth crores of rupees.

He allegedly played a key role in smuggling arms and explosives into India during January 1993 for the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. The CBI had got a red corner notice for his arrest issued in 1994. The trial court (Tada court), after completing the trial of the blasts case, has convicted 100 of the accused and is expected to pronounce their sentences shortly.

As many as 36 accused are in judicial custody, and some of them have been in jail for more than 10 years. However, 37 accused, including Khan, are still absconding. The agency had filed chargesheets in all 27 cases at the Tada court in Mumbai on November 4, 1993. The charges against the accused were framed on April 10, 1995. Recording of evidence by the court was completed on June 30, 1995, during which 684 witnesses were examined. The final arguments in the case were recorded between August to November 2001 and the trial was completed in September 2003. The agency had named 122 persons as accused.
