Incest was Best

The story of innocence, sin, and gene mutation.

OK... I heard this theory over the weekend... Probably on a podcast, but I'm not sure. So I can't give credit.

It goes like this: When God created Adam and Eve, the human gene pool was perfect. No illnesses, no hereditary diseases, no mutations. That is why all mankind could come from the same set of parents. Adam's son having a child with his sister was no more sinful than it was for Abraham and his sister, Sarah... Nor was it dangerous for the offspring.

But when sin entered the world, it gradually took its toll on the human gene pool, and by the time Moses set down The Law, it was no longer wise for families to procreate within themselves. There were too many mutated genes concentrated in immediate and extended families, and the health of progeny dictated a change.

I like this theory not only because it explains a few things, but also because it says something about God's economy when it comes to placing limits on our freedom. As James McDonald often says, "When God says 'don't', He means don't hurt yourself."

I had heard something to this effect many, many years ago, Chris, in a class I was taking.

We disgussed this for 3 days and the one big thing I took from this was that G-d IS in control of everything. He has a plan and His plan is perfect.

Great post, Chris....

In the case of Adam and Eve, there wasn't much choice for their children as to whom to marry, was there? :-)

Even as recent as the 1900's, there were people who married cousins because the area in which they lived the people were all related in one way or another.

But, the laws G-d has laid down are for our good. Some people snicker at the laws regarding what is Kosher to eat and what isn't. Some will eat specifically things that are forbidden in order to prove that "we are no longer under the law and therefore I can eat what I want".

Weeeellll, eat some pork that has been in the desert some and let me know how the treatment for worms go. Or, eat some shellfish, (which are scavangers with no way to release the toxins they clean up, as do pigs), and see if mercury poisoning or some such thing happens.

Or - howabout other sins? Beastilaity led to syphillis in humans; fornication and adultery led to the spread of syphillis and gonorrhea; homosexuality led to AIDS (that does NOT mean I think it is a judgement from G-d - but it is a consecquence of actions that G-d said "Do not do".) Not only are such things sin and in some cases (an abomination) to G-d, they are with severe consequences.

It's smart to realize that G-d is G-d, and it's wise to obey Him.

Plain and simple, to follow G-d's laws is not being "under the law". It's being Free to follow that which G-d has said in order to be safe and healthy.

Tsofah just reminded me of a cemetary on Ocracoke Island, NC. There were only about 8-10 different surnames. The ones I remember were Midget, O'Neil, Williams, Fulcher and Howard. These names are also common on Hatteras Island as well.

You know, I've been a Christian since I was quite young. Some might say I've been sheltered or missed out on all the "fun" stuff, but honestly I don't feel like I missed anything except a lot of life-long regrets and concerns.

God's laws give us freedom to live healthy, well-adjusted happy lives. Far from being restrictive and no fun, these laws allow us to live our lives relatively free from self-inflicted harm.
