I took up the rest of the white wall to wall carpeting in my living room which is attached to my dining room. I have no idea what kind of rug, or color to buy.
I'll have to ponder the rug question but good GRIEF you have great floors! Mom and Dad and i were just talking about me taking up the carpet in my house - which a carpet guy recently called "granny carpet" - but we are scared about the condition of the floors underneath. If only I could know they look like yours I'd rip it up right now! I'm very impressed.
Just off the top of my head, I would say a medium to navy blue rug would work. (Of course this all depends on if my computer colors are showing your furniture colors accurately.) A darker rug would be easier to keep clean too.
I think I would probably opt for a solid color or a very small pattern. I'll give it some thought.
Andrew (who can't be bothered to type this himself) has weighed in and says "Given what I know of his personal preferences, I would suggest a lovely shade of pink."
I'm with Christina (not Andrew). Use the couch as a color source. Get a solid blue area rug the color of the blue in the couch, with a border the color of the cream in the couch. Possible design here (the colors (and texture) are wrong, but it gives you an idea of the design I have in mind.
Go to Lowes and Home Depot and just look at the gazillion area rugs they have hanging. One will strike your fancy. I like the others ideas. With a coffee table in front of the sofa you can get away with patterns that might not otherwise work, like a large block pattern of blues and tans or just tan. The wood floor is fabulous!
A blue square rug would be good there. It would "define" the area as well as accentuate the blue in the couch. It would also be a room brightener without being overly so.
I love the floors. The rug would be a good accent.

I don't know either....but those hardwood floors look great!
Janice,
Thanks. Do you think a patterned rug would look bad next to the couch?

All his words, not mine. Aren't you proud?

Just my two cents...

If those were my hardwood floors, no way I'm putting carpet over them.
