Happier, more sober times. Great rendition... 1991.

Aside from the amazing voice, what a lovely expression of patriotism this is. Somehow I don't think that's allowed any more from mainstream musicians. I confess that I'm a long time American Idol fan. I've tried to shame myself out of it, but I just can't help myself. I've lost interest in the last few years, but basically I think it's a very entertaining and healthy process (though I hate the moniker). One thing I'd like to see them do is dedicate a week to singing the National Anthem. It's so common for renowned singers to be called upon to sing the National Anthem for various events. The worst mistake so many singers make is that they try to make it their own, bigger, fancier and more customized than anyone else's version, and it always becomes ridiculous. Wouldn't it be nice for American Idol to train them that the job is about singing a song that is bigger than they are and that it's a privilege to sing it. After all, it is AMERICAN Idol.

Oh come on! The moniker is absolute perfection!

We watch the show and worship the idols of fame, fortune, talent, youth, celebrity... It may be one of the more harmless buckets of sewage produced when the bowels of Hollywood move... But I respect it because it's the one offering from the enemy that has the name right.

You always come up with something insightful that I hadn't thought of (Always hated that about you) and you're right about the National Anthem... the way performers try to make it about themselves.

Excellent point.

I know, I know...I told you I've tried to shame myself out of it and I know the name of the show is simply a reflection of our cultural apostasy. But at least their winners and runners-up are typically not pigs. And, unlike other reality shows, the process fosters mutual encouragement among the contestants - you never hear them bashing each other, and the contestant's performances are always clean. Can't say the same for some of the idiot stars they allow to perform on the show. Okay...I won't try to defend it any more.
