Abortion By Any Other Name

This weekend, Catholic bishops informed parishioners of the recent White House edict forcing religious hospitals, schools, charities, and other health and social-service providers to provide “free” abortifacient pills, sterilizations, and contraception on demand in their insurance plans — even if it violates their moral consciences and the teachings of their churches.

As always, tolerance is a one-way street in the Age of Obama. “Choice” is in the eye (and iron fist) of the First Amendment usurper.

It's important to understand that this isn't about contraception.  Abortifacient pills induce abortion, so this law demands that religious organizations, such as hospitals and schools, provide insurance that pays for drugs that abort the unborn.  Oh and guess what... Government insurance that the taxpayer funds will do the same thing.  So much for all the promises to the contrary. 

I'm not sure how the American Catholics will respond to this outrage.  But I am supremely confident that the Evangelicals will shrug their shoulders and get about the business of planning their next purchase, meal out, or vacation.

Thank you so much for posting this and PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE pray for wisdom for our council of bishops. I apologize in advance for the length of my comments. Make no mistake about it, this is a huge spiritual battle. The council of bishops weakly expressed support for Obamacare naively wanting good for everyone back in 2009 and trusting that exemptions would be made. Now they are seeing what lurks behind the curtain. They really sound like their eyes have been opened, but it will be a real battle.

This has brought into start light the Catholic teaching against birth control that is almost universal viewed as absurd, even by most Catholics. This is a good thing, because it is a very interesting thing to research and I hope people will do so.

Imagine yourself back in the early 20th century as science was charging forward like a freight train. Along comes the science of eugenics. Go ahead...look it up. This coincided with the great intellectual age of atheism. What we know as modern birth control finds it's origins in the science of eugenics. ALL of the scientists involved understood that eugenics had enormous potential for impacting demographics - Carl Djerassi, the father of "the pill" called the impact in his home country of Austia devastating. He said the elite of Austria partook of birth control as if to say we will eat our schnitzels and let the world go its way. Colorful. As birth control evolved as a sub-set of Eugenics you'll find all kinds of writings about eradicating the mental defective, dependent, weak, epileptic "weeds" among us. It all kinda could make sense if you didn't buy into God's word that clearly teaches that we are at our best with weakness in our midst. Eugenics was also highly racially focused. Margaret Sanger was a huge proponent of the eugenics concept. Guess what else was riding the eugenics train!!! That's right - Facism. Which gave us a glaring glimpse into what can be defined as the "weeds" among us (read Jews, among other classes subject to eradication tactics leading up to WWII.)

Fast forward to today. Now we think of birth control as an obvious responsibility to ensure good stewardship of the planet and a higher quality of life for children, especially poor (oops, I hope no one notices that little slip back into basic eugenics). It's almost a sin not to make use of birth control. But, brothers and sisters, I am completely convinced that birth control comes from the same spirit that causes our entire modern christian culture to bow at the altars of materialism and self-centeredness and say "We trust you, God, and give ourselves up for you, except not our reproductive lives. We do not trust you with that. That is too closely linked to how much stuff we'll have and how we will spend our time."

As an aside, I find it interesting that three of the most hideous stories in the Old Testament involve people deeply entwined with God exercising their sexual freedom from him. Drunken Noah and his daughters, Abraham, Sarah, Haggar and Ishmael, and David and Bathsheba. Note that two of two of them even involve primative and grotesque birth control.

This context really helps me understand why the Catholic church took a position against birth control. Of course it did! At first it seems like low hanging fruit to ridicule, but when you dig into the tree a little it gets very pithy.

The Catholic church is a sad, silly, ineffective, mess in many ways. It is also a glorious bulwark of truth at it's core. The HHS edict is a strike at it's core, not at it's foolishness, and it's just the beginning.

Thanks so much for your comments.

I guess I never really thought of birth control as yet another example of the idolatry of self... another way of living as if our lives were our own. But it does make sense.

I believe the precipitous decay of our culture directly coincides with the growing worldliness of America's believers. The people in our Churches are so much like the world. Their lives are about convenience, entertainment, leisure, comfort... and Jesus is just an accessory in their lifestyle. If Paul came to our Churches today, I think he would deliver the same message that he wrote to the Corinthians: "Come out from them and be separate."

I pray for the Church, but every Sunday frustrates me. We are the rich of this world, and yet we are not challenged to examine ourselves, or to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. No, we don't need to pursue Holiness... because we have grace.

The enemy captured the Courts, the government, television, the culture... And I look at our Churches and I contemplate the enemy within.

I'm glad that Jesus has already overcome the world, because the battle for America doesn't look promising.

No, it doesn't look good for America. I'm afraid we're at a place where we have to start losing stuff like freedoms before we'll be willing to pay the price to get them back. We're just not in the business of paying for stuff now. On all levels from the Federal Government, the rich, the middle class to the generational welfare people, we either charge it or get it free by entitlement. Not a very self sustaining system.
