Who Decides What is Best for Our Public Schools?

I have of late been involved in a discussion of what is appropriate instruction for grammar and high school children. I found a statement that perfectly sums up my feelings at lain Hall.

I have the greatest respect for teachers( I am married to one after all) but the people who have a clear right to judge them are not their peers but the parents, and students, who make use of their services. We as parents expect that the teachers in our schools will act as our proxies, to teach OUR children, as WE desire them to be taught.

Perfectly said.

I think the problem lies in that not every parent is qualified to "judge" a teacher. Nor is every teacher qualified to "judge" a parent.

Through my 40 years, I have met teachers that were the smartest, most qualified educators on the planet.

I have also met some that were dumber than a sack of doorknobs.

It's a fuzzy area. Teachers can, like other professionals (police officers, most notably), attain a certain of arrogance. Not all teachers -- just some.

I would agree that allowing just teachers to judge other teachers is probably not the best method, however.

Firstly I want to say thanks for linking to me I am flattered.

Teaching our children is the most important thing that any of us do with our lives they are our legacy for the future. I get so annoyed with arrogant teachers who think that they have a right to inculcate their values into our children.
Your recent run in with Arthur and Bruce show us exactly the sort of militant fundamentalist atheists that think that they are right and that they have a duty to promote their beliefs to our children.
You may be surprised to learn that I say this as an atheist myself. But that is because I think that the religious belief that a child learns should come from the parents and not their teachers.
I have been most amused by Arthur's pro Homosexual attacks upon you. I have clashed with him on this a few times in the past He denies being gay himself but I have never met another Heterosexual who writes so often and defends so vigorously any topic that touches on gay issues so go figure.
Any way forgive this long rambling comment I like your blog and your 'tude so I will be adding you to my blog crawl (like a pub crawl with out beer) and to my blog roll.
Best wishes

PS the blogger word varifacation is a pain and it does not do much at all for comments security; when I blogged on blogger I disabled it to make it easier for people who wanted to post comments...

lain,

"Militant Fundamentalist Atheist"

I like it.

I'm sorry to hear you are an atheist, but I appreciate your attitude towards the family.

Verification [is] a pain. Took it off for awhile and started getting crap in my "Best of" - had to monitor - didn't like that either.

Don't feel that sorry for me I take a great deal of what I consider to be virtuous in Christianity; love , forgiveness and altruism ect into the way I relate to my fellows. It is just the supernatural stuff that I have a problem with :o) . I tend to think that it is to hubristic to believe that we will have any continuance after the death of our body. If I find that there is any thing after death I will be delighted but if there isn't then It wont matter to me. :O)

Now it is my turn to preach
