Supporting Chick-fil-A
I happened upon an article by Barnabas Piper, a Believer who wrote that Huckabee's Chick-fil-A Appreciation day was a bad idea:
"Homosexuality is one of the most defining, contentious, and complex issues facing this generation of the church. We cannot sacrifice our biblical convictions but neither can we sacrifice the church’s ability to serve people of opposing viewpoints and lifestyles."
"Convictions, especially biblical ones, will divide people. That is inevitable, but not desirable. The separation of believers and unbelievers, when it happens, must be a last resort or an unavoidable result. Actions to the contrary, those that clearly promote an “us versus them” mentality, are most often unhelpful."
OK... first of all I can't imagine God sending anyone into Sodom and Gomorrah to serve the Homosexuals there. He would more likely send a prophet to preach the truth.
Maybe God wants us to love Homosexuals and show it by being polite and telling them the truth. Trying to make them think we're nice seems a little horizontal and sounds like something Joel Olsteen would come up with. Maybe Mr Piper believes that if he backs down in the face of this controversy, and if he presents Jesus -in just the right way- his carefully chosen words might work wonders. Maybe, but I don't think salvation comes about that way.
Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day will anger people who love perversion and hate the Church. But it's not us vs. them, it's them vs. God. They are mocking God... They are persecuting our Lord. They will repent of this or they will go to hell. We should love them enough, be kind enough, to tell them that.
Homosexuals, like everyone else, have eternity in their hearts. Our job is to speak the truth. Their job is to make their choice. Any other approach is about the cleverness of men, not the saving power of God.
