This looks fantastic! I'm coming to your house if the zombie apocalypse hits California.

So here's my completely ignorant question for the day:

What does the straw around the tomato plants do?

The garden looks great...but no watermelons? Doesn't every garden need watermelons? :)

Pretty great garden. I've tried down here but can't protect it adequately from the deer that run amok around here. It's just too heartbreaking to have everything growing like crazy and then go out one morning to find it all mowed down by those crazy eating machines. The romance of the graceful and elegant deer and adorable Bambi's is completely gone for me. They are marauders. What they don't eat they stomp into stubble with their sharp hooves. It's the produce aisle for me.

Skyepuppy, I've seen certain videos from your state that suggest the apocalypse is well under way. I'll be serving tomatoes with every meal starting at the end of July...

Christina, The straw holds in moisture and keeps down the weeds. And, Dad has watermelon and cantaloupe about the size of softballs.

Grammy, putting up an inexpensive garden fence like mine might discourage them... especially if there was a small unfenced option for them next to it. I'll bet you miss Indiana tomatoes.

Allow me to whine about deer a little more. Deer levitate over fences - I've seen them do it. There is no effort involved whatsoever. Our entire back yard is fenced in. I tried putting up a fence around the garden and netting over it but they simply stomp around in it trying to figure out how to get to the plants. I have a spray that works but you're toast if you forget a night. The only real solution is a good dog like our Buzzy. I miss Buzzy and I do not like deer.

What are these... Ninja deer? Do they wear leather jackets and smoke?
