One Last Stab At It

If you wish to tell me that the official name of the Democrat Party is "Democratic Party" - Fine, I'll accept that. Based on their politics and actions, it's a misnomer - but fine.

But please have the sense to understand that "Democrat Party" is a perfectly legitimate and grammatically correct way to describe a political party made of Democrats.

Also correct: Democrats' party

Incorrect: Democratics' party

Those who complain about the use of "Democrat Party" have never called members of the party "Democratics". Such an inconsistency topped off with a knee jerk reaction to what they claim is a misname does not make sense.

I'd let this go if it weren't for the condescending tone - I got plenty sense.

We all know that using Democrat as an adjective (yes, I'm touching the "adjective" tar baby even though there is a risk get I'll slapped down grammar police) emerged in the 90's as part of a poll-tested strategy to control the language. Simply put, "democrat" polls less favorably that "democratic", it sounds jarring, and there has been a concerted effort by conservatives to capitalize on that. Its a small part of the coarsening of our political debate, propagated deliberately.

I never corrected you. I haven't complained. I don't take offense. I pointed out in passing that I know what you're doing. Your use of that mild slander reflects upon you, the big, very serious man addressing the day's matters of consequence.

Don't pretend to be above this petty little shot you're taking. Own up to it like a man.

Oh my, PAW... Was I being coarse and vulgar?

I just hope those of you in the party that calls our president a "chickenhawk" and a liar - burns American Soldiers in effigy - calls conservatives "bigots" - calls devout Christians "fundies"... (I could go on)

I just hope you can find it in your staid, sophisticated, and graceous hearts to forgive me for being so crude and insensitive as to call your party The Democrat Party.

I for one will own up to taking great fun at petty shots at the Democrats. A serious attack of depth is better, but petty shots at their soft exposed underbelly are fun too.
