Pneumonia is an Old Man's Friend

Pneumonia is called the old man's friend because, left untreated, the sufferer often lapses into a state of reduced consciousness, slipping peacefully away in their sleep, giving a dignified end to a period of often considerable suffering.

My mother was very nauseated a couple days ago and was vomiting.  I went to the nursing home and sat with her, occasionally wiping her chin... Something she couldn't do for herself.  It was very hard to see her suffer as she looked to me for the help I could not give.

I got up early yesterday and went in to check on her.   She was better and I ended up feeding her.  I'm sure she could tell that I was an amateur at this because she gave me a couple bad looks when I didn't do it right.  58 years ago these roles were reversed.

Anyway, an X-ray of here lungs showed a little bit of pneumonia, and I have to wonder if this might be her ticket Home.

Supporting Chick-fil-A

I happened upon an article by Barnabas Piper, a Believer who wrote that Huckabee's Chick-fil-A Appreciation day was a bad idea:

"Homosexuality is one of the most defining, contentious, and complex issues facing this generation of the church. We cannot sacrifice our biblical convictions but neither can we sacrifice the church’s ability to serve people of opposing viewpoints and lifestyles."

"Convictions, especially biblical ones, will divide people. That is inevitable, but not desirable. The separation of believers and unbelievers, when it happens, must be a last resort or an unavoidable result. Actions to the contrary, those that clearly promote an “us versus them” mentality, are most often unhelpful."

OK... first of all I can't imagine God sending anyone into Sodom and Gomorrah to serve the Homosexuals there.  He would more likely send a prophet to preach the truth.

Maybe God wants us to love Homosexuals and show it by being polite and telling them the truth.  Trying to make them think we're nice seems a little horizontal and sounds like something Joel Olsteen would come up with.  Maybe Mr Piper believes that if he backs down in the face of this controversy, and if he  presents Jesus -in just the right way- his carefully chosen words might work wonders.  Maybe, but I don't think salvation comes about that way.

Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day will anger people who love perversion and hate the Church.  But it's not us vs. them, it's them vs. God.  They are mocking God... They are persecuting our Lord.  They will repent of this or they will go to hell.  We should love them enough, be kind enough, to tell them that.

Homosexuals, like everyone else, have eternity in their hearts.  Our job is to speak the truth.  Their job is to make their choice.  Any other approach is about the cleverness of men, not the saving power of God.

Malott Wins Copper at 30th Olympiad

The entire staff at Malott's Blog wishes to congratulate our venerable leader for winning the Copper Medal in the 32 meter Augmented-Breast Stroke.  It was a close race and we feared his zits might produce enough drag to hold him back, but Malott sprinted the last four meters and touched-out his closest competition, a Saudi woman in a burqa.

"I've never pushed myself that hard and I'm pretty sure I soiled myself," said Malott, basking in the glow of his new-found celebrity.

To say we are proud of our leader is to say more than we are presently prepared to say.

A Hoosier Moment

While driving in Kokomo today I arrived at a 4-Way Stop at the same moment two gentlemen in a rust-laden pickup stopped there.  Actually the driver of the truck arrived a split second before I did, but he seemed so deeply engrossed in conversation with his fellow traveler, I continued into the intersection... just as he too decided to cross.  He slammed on his brakes, as would have I, had I not felt committed to my venture.  But I'm sure he understood because he attempted to flash me the peace sign, though in the confusion of the moment he managed only to raise his middle finger.

But the misunderstanding did not detract from this warm exchange of rural brotherhood.

In his friendly enthusiasm, he followed me for a couple blocks abiding very close to my rear bumper, and in the my rear-view mirror I noticed that he seemed to be shouting... no doubt a polite cordiality of some kind.  And I would have stopped, but time was short... and my schedule denied me of what promised to be a delightful encounter.

Dullympics

Is there anything more excruciating than the Olympics?   From the endless, tedious  soccer games to the subjective judging in female gymnastics ( A recently deceased sister is worth at least a bronze medal ), the Olympics are the greatest entertainment in the world if you really, really have nothing else to do.

Olympic organisers scrambled to halt a public backlash over the sight of empty seats at competition venues, recruiting an army of soldiers and students to fill the voids and upgrading spectators with cheaper tickets.

(I think the soldier in the middle found something more interesting to watch than the Games.  Perhaps a pigeon.)

And the opening ceremony... What an embarrassment for Great Britain.  Oh sure, Paul McCartney still has an amazing voice for a corpse, but whoever thought up the Red-Eyed-Bug-Bikes had to be on drugs.  I myself had to look away.  The Queen was surely soiling herself in the Royal Box as she suffered through... ... Whatever that was supposed to be.

But I have a good book to read, and there is always programming to watch that I find more exciting than the Olympics, like reruns of The Golden Girls... in Spanish.

So let the Games drag on... And on... And on...

Let's All Eat at Chick-fil-A

Michelle Malkin-National Review:
Chick-fil-A is an American success story. Founded by Georgian entrepreneur Truett Cathy in 1946, the family-owned chicken-sandwich chain is one of the country’s largest fast-food businesses. It employs some 50,000 workers across the country at 1,500 outlets in nearly 40 states and the District of Columbia. The company generates more than $2 billion in revenue and serves millions of happy customers with trademark Southern hospitality.

So, what’s the problem? Well, Chick-fil-A is run by devout Christians who believe in strong marriages, devoted families, and the highest standards of character for their workers. The restaurant chain’s official corporate mission is to “glorify God” and “enrich the lives of everyone we touch.” The company’s community-service initiatives, funded through its WinShape Foundation, support foster-care, scholarship, summer-camp, and marriage-enrichment programs. On Sunday, all Chick-fil-A stores close so workers can spend the day at worship and rest.

Over the past month, several progressive-activist blogs have waged an ugly war against Chick-fil-A. The company’s alleged atrocity: One of its independent outlets in Pennsylvania donated some sandwiches and brownies to a marriage seminar run by the Pennsylvania Family Institute, which happens to oppose same-sex marriage.

Over the weekend, New York Times reporter Kim Severson gave the Chick-fil-A bashers a coveted Sunday A-section megaphone...

I've only had their chicken sandwich once (I loved it) because there are no franchises in this area.  But I hope Christians everywhere will step up to the plate and support these people.  The persecution of Christians is just beginning...

All the Church is a Stage

I'm developing a new theory about organized religion in America.  I define organized religion as what takes place in those buildings that the Bride of Christ and other believers visit on Sunday mornings.

Maybe it's because we grew up watching television, (which is sitting on your butt and inviting strangers into your home to entertain you - a phenomenon peculiar to the last 60 years)... but in our generation organized religion has come to be all about entertainment and performers.  If the entertainment is good, the numbers increase.  If the entertainment is bad...

My theory is that there are many frustrated orators, frustrated comedians, frustrated rock stars, frustrated musicians... and yes, even frustrated dancers and actors who have found the attention they crave... an audience... a stage... right up there next to the pulpit.  The bad ones play to small audiences, and the good ones play to large audiences.

I assume that on stage, the Bride is in the minority, just as she is in the audience.  You'd really have to spend Monday through Saturday with these people to find out.

This year I want my life to be more about the Bridegroom and less about this world.  I want to turn off my TV, come out from this ugly culture, and be separate.  I want to pray more, and do a better job of honoring God with my life.  And on Sunday morning, I want to find the best darn show in town.

Bury Lenin?

I read on Drudge that the Russians are considering burying the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin that has been on display in a glass coffin since his death in 1924.

I hate the idea.  Vlad, the greatest Russian socialist,  is still a terrific tourist attraction.

In fact, I think America's greatest socialist, Barrack Obama, should be embalmed and put under glass on display.  This week is good for me.

Blacks Boo Romney

Mitt Romney was booed when he spoke to the NAACP, an organization that claims to look out for the concerns of African Americans.

No big deal.  If  Obama spoke to the Ku Klux Klan, an organization that claims to look out for the concerns of white people, he'd probably get booed, too.

Does "Blacks Boo Romney" sound like a great name for a Blues artist?"

Anyway, I guess there was also some polite applause when Romney spoke.  That's nice.

Contentment

I believe that God has given even the least among us those things they need to have "a life" that is independent of wealth, relationships, and experience. How often have we heard of the poor frightened soul on his deathbed who in a torrent of regret realizes the most horrible of all realities - that he is about to die... and he has never really lived.

What nonsense. The richest, most famous and celebrated human beings on the planet already have, or will, pass through the same portal as I will, possessionless and anxious, into our Maker's presence. At the point of entering eternity, having known the extravagances of travel, great possessions, relationships, and fame will pass with the same notoriety as yesterday's cup of coffee.

I've come to believe that there are really only two experiences in life... Our faith, and the distractions from our faith. Could it be that the poorest among us is he who can afford the most distractions? Is an hour spent on your knees in prayer a less monumental experience - or less real - than a Caribbean cruise or a trip to Hawaii? If a man walks with God, is he alone if he has no wife or family? If a child dies, has he really missed anything as he is gathered into the arms of Jesus at Heaven's gate?

Christianity allows a rapidly aging, untravelled, childless, and unloved old bachelor such as me an amazing freedom from regret, as I bathe in the contentment of knowing that this life is not the party, and that every disappointment and pain is a garment for my soul as it is readied for its trip home.

I believe that developing a spiritual life, a connection with the real world, is key to contentment. It is like developing a new consciousness, and a process that is only impeded by the craving for, and possession of, material things. If we spend our lives chasing the next possession... the next experience, comfort, relationship, or pleasure... we miss our portion, our God-given blessings that have nothing in common with the little illusions we so desperately build around us, seeking to grasp control of something of which we can never have control. Life was meant to be lived, but its fullest expressions are available to the timid as well as the bold, the plain as well as the pretty, and the poor as well as the rich. The best of life can take root in the poorest soil. It can blossom in the most unlikely heart.

In a few minutes I will go out and squat in my garden and pull weeds from my carrots. I will listen to songs of praise on my Walkman tuned to Moody radio. There will be a breeze on my face and the sun on my bare back. It may not be as good as Disneyworld. But I will be content.

I wrote this in August, 2006 I wrote better back then.  I still believe every word, and I still have as much trouble living what I believe.

Quote of the Week

"Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it, or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness."
-- Chief Justice John Roberts writing the majority opinion - Affordable Health Care Act

I'd like to think that Chief Justice Roberts' opinion was a principled decision.  I'd like to think that Roberts personally believes the Health Care act is a bad idea.  I'd like to think that Robert's sees nothing in the Constitution that would allow him to overturn it.

I believe the liberals on the court who care nothing for the Constitution decided based upon their own personal preferences... As they always do.

I also believe this is going to light a fire in The Tea Party.

Jerry Sandusky Found Guilty Amidst "Gay Pride Month" Celebrations

"June is 'Gay Pride Month,' which immediately begs two questions: Says who? and, How is it that we have become a nation of such compliant sheep that we accept this rubbish?"
--Brent Bozell

I was developing a theory that suggested that every development in our American Culture was a reflection of the condition of our Churches.  But that's not true... The Bride of Christ is doing great!  It is better stated that every development of our American Culture is a reflection of the condition of our believers... Or a reflection of organized religion.

You believe?  Good for you!  The demons believe... And they have the sense to tremble.  Organized religion in America has forgotten how to tremble.

It's hard to find the Bride among the rich... though Believers abound.

Now if you asked any one of the worldly, lukewarm believers that populate our pews (and pulpits), they would say, "I do not approve of 'Gay Pride Month' and I would have protested... but I was busy watching my favorite reruns of Will and Grace."

Anyway, I believe history will show that Jerry Sandusky was found guilty for messing with little boys two thousand years too late... and a few years too early.  And I predict that when the homosexuality of Ancient Greece is legalized in this country, the American Church-goer will shrug his shoulders and plan his next purchase.

Gay Bowel Syndrome

Gay bowel syndrome is an outdated term first used by Henry L Kazal and colleagues in 1976 to describe the various sexually transmitted perianal and rectal diseases and sexual traumas seen in Kazal's proctology practice, which had many gay patients.  The term "gay bowel syndrome" is considered obsolete and derogatory.

The term was not specific to any particular disease or infection, and was used clinically to describe proctitis and a variety of other complaints caused by a wide range of infectious organisms.  Transmission of disease was considered to take place by two routes: anal sex, and fecal-oral route (anal–oral sex or coprophagia).

Now, I believe whatever consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home is none of my business... ... ... ... But C'mon!   Anal-oral sex?  How perverted do you have be to be do something so unpleasant and disgusting -something that is totally contrary to everything you learned in toilet training?

Momma don't let your babies grow up to be coprophagiacs...

I mean, I like to think of myself as a fun guy... adventurous, and a good sport... But some things would just never occur to me.  I don't think straight people do that kind of thing.

I figure left-wingers, the Democrat Leadership, and the Gay Community are all cut from the same cloth.  I mean,  once you've sanctioned the killing of the unborn, just where does your moral compass kick in and say, this is wrong.   In the same way, once you've embraced perversion, the most disgusting acts are a matter of taste... So to speak.

As for me, my poop-chute is, and forever will be, a lonely place.

While We Were Working

Our secretary has always had a job.  For a while she drew blood at our lab during the day and then worked at the local Pizza Hut at night.  Then she left us and managed the Pizza Hut.  Then she came back and became our secretary.  Recently she took a job at a local Super Market to help make ends meet.

Yesterday she told us a story about a woman who came to her checkout with a basket full of cookies and candy and pop... Lots and lots of pop.  The woman had her Food Stamps in hand when she was told that the paper plates she'd picked up (so that she wouldn't have to do dishes) could not be paid for with Food Stamps.  The woman rolled her eyes, and with manicured nails, retrieved a One Hundred Dollar Bill from her wallet.

I'm sure this same woman is first in line when the local food bank opens.

I figure it this way:  I can give my money to IDES, which builds shacks in India and digs wells in Africa... Or, I can give to local charities so that our poor can afford Cinemax.
